Maine Necrotizing Fasciitis Lawsuit

Cases of a rare but serious infection of the genitals and the genital area are being reported in users of a class of popular Type 2 diabetes drugs called sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors.

SGLT2 inhibitors are used along with diet and exercise to lower blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes.  SGLT2 inhibitors work by causing the kidneys to remove sugars from the body through urine.  SGLT2 inhibitors include Invokana (canagliflozin), Farxiga (dapagliflozin), Jardiance (empagliflozin) and Steglatro (ertugliflozin).

This serious infection, called necrotizing fasciitis of the perineum, or Fournier’s gangrene, can cause symptoms of tenderness, redness, or swelling of the genitals or the area from the genitals back to the rectum, fever, and a general feeling of being unwell.  The symptoms can rapidly worsen.

Treatment can include discontinuation of the drug and immediately starting a course of broad-spectrum antibiotics.  Surgical debridement of the genitals and/or genital area is also required in more serious cases.

If you or a loved one has suffered necrotizing fasciitis of the perineum, Fournier’s gangrene or another serious genital infection while on a SGLT2 inhibitor, you may be entitled to significant compensation for your injuries.
