Maine IVC Filter Attorney

IVC filters are implanted within a patient’s inferior vena cava to prevent blood clots from migrating from the lower extremities to the heart or lungs.  Newer, retrievable designs of IVC filters are intended to be removed shortly after implantation.  The FDA recommends removal as soon as the blood clotting risk passes, usually within a few weeks.  However, many devices are left in place for years with serious consequences to the patient.

Studies reveal that the longer a retrievable IVC filter remains in place, the more difficult it is to remove.   20-40 % of IVC filters left in place long-term cannot be removed due to embedment of one or more of the arms or legs called struts within the inner lining of the vena cava.  Additionally, the longer a filter remains implanted the greater the risk of serious complication, including fracture of a strut, perforation of a strut through the vena cava, or tilt of the device within the vena cava.

Interventional radiologists remove retrievable IVC filters in a way similar to how they are implanted by using a snare introduced into the vena cava via a catheter to grab a hook at the top of the filter.  A sheath then covers the filter, collapsing its legs, and the interventional radiologist pulls the catheter out with the IVC filter inside.

If scar tissue has grown around the IVC filter, removal is often more complicated.  If a filter cannot be removed percutaneously, the patient may have to consider an open or laser surgery or opt to leave the device implanted.

Removing IVC filters presents serious risks to the patient.  The procedure may damage blood vessels, break filters or cause other complications.

If you have a retrievable IVC filter that you are considering having removed, or if you have been seriously injured by an IVC filter, you may be entitled to significant compensation for your injuries.
